Zigzag through the Bitter Orange Trees

The winter has begun and when outside there is bad weather and the television transmitting always the same programs I like to spend my time reading a book.
So for the lovers of the literature I suggest to read “Zigzag through the Bitter Orange Trees” one of the best novels of the past ten years, written by Ersi Sotiropulos.

Ersi Sotiropulos studied philosophy and cultural anthropology in Florence and worked with the Greek embassy in Rome. She is an acclaimed Greek poet, writer of novels and short stories.
She debut her first novel in 1982, and with Zigzag through the Bitter Orange Trees she won the Greek national prize for literature and the Greece preeminent book critics award in 2000.
It has been said that what makes her stories memorable is that “they are at once familiar and troubling, compelling and unapproachable; they give us a new way of seeing”.
The novel tells us the stories of four guys with different lives that at some point meet.
Everything takes place in the modern Greece. There is Sid that doesn’t know what to do in his life and he has a difficult time also because Lia his sister is hospitalized with a rare disease.
Sid spend his night in a local tavern drinking beers and thinking about his life, but one day something changes, Sid meets Giulia a girl with a gothic look and after a series of events the two become friends and soon the love is born between them.
Lia is forced to stay in the hospital for her illness and everyday she fights with her nurse Satoris.
Satoris  an unstable person that spend his free time following a rebel young girl of twelve years old named Nina  that lives with her aunt and dreams to escape from the  humdrum life around her.
The author portrays the conflicted world of the young. I think that “Zigzag through the Bitter Orange Trees” is a nice book and perfect for everyone I hope you will have a good time with the curious stories of our four guys.
