Vilas - seductive monsters

A lonely man walks alone in the nature, further and further, on the top of a hill, where the mist dims his eyes and leads his thoughts to his deepest desires. A beautiful ghostlike woman appears, dancing in the air, rarely dressed...

The man tries to touch her, to impress her, but his hands grasp at nothing. He tries again and again, he would'nt leave this mysterious place until he would find out more about this wonderful creature. Lost in his thoughts and passion, he doesn't notice that the light warm breeze becomes a cold wind, a violent storm. The ghost becomes angrier and angrier as it sees the untamed lust of the man and a heavy blast of wind throws the man into a deep and dark canyon.

Vila - this is the name of this seductive monster that is able to control the wind. This really sounds like a creature of the Greek mythology, doesn't it? Or is it just an invention of a fantasy novel?

Vilas are mostly young frivolous women who died unbaptized or unmarried. Instead of entering the world of the dead they are trapped in this world as ghosts. They live on mountains, in forests and also in the water, alone and lonely. Furthermore they are barely dressed, often naked and admired by mortal men, envied by mortal women. Their voices are as beautiful as her appearance and if they only loose one of their beautiful long hair they die. Sometimes they are willing to help humans with their healing powers, but if a man annoys or defies them, they become angry and often use their power over the wind to kill them.

And this makes the Vilas to one of the most dangerous creatures: you don't run away and you aren't afraid if you see them. Without this fear you become careless and your lust and desire could mean your end. This is one creature I really don't want to meet. But if I were a man I would be at least a bit curious...

Solution:
Vilas are not creatures of the Greek but of the Slavic mythology. They have similarities with the Sirens of the Greek mythology. Furthermore they appear in the fantasy novel "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire".
