Hippocampus

It is time for another episode of Creatures from Hellas and with this we will have another guessing game. Today we speak about a creature, you might have already heard of. The Hippocampus. But do you know whether it is only a creature created by fantasy, or a part of greek mythology?

The Hippocampus is indeed a creature from greek mythology.
The thing that makes this creature special is it's look it has the upper body of a horse and the lower body of a fish. Therefore it is often referred to as "sea horse". Sometimes it is also depicted with wings. People used to belive it is the adult form of the seahorse.

As they live in the ocean, some say that the sea studs that are generated by waves crashing are caused by their movement beneath sea. Although it seems like a scary creature it is not vicious at all. It never eats humans, it only feeds on plants that can be found on the bottom of the sea. If they ever have to defend themselves they use their strong and powerful tails before they quickly swim away to avoid further conflict.

They are usually found in packs in fresh as well as salt water. Ten Hippocampi form a pack which consists of a stallion a few mares and a few young hippocampi. The mares lay eggs, which hatch within six months. After that the Hippocampus takes one year to mature physically and two years to mature intellectually.

It is also belived that this noble creature saved sailors from drowning and protected them from the monsters of the sea, it also helped with all problems faced by humans on the seas.

So what do you think? Could this creature have its roots in Greek Mythology.
