Lamia

It is time for our guessing game. In the next minutes, I will tell you the story about Lamia and afterwards you can decide if you think she is part in the Greek mythology or if I just told you the story about a creature created by Hollywood. Ready? Okay, lets’ go.

Lamia was born as a queen and she was unbelievably beautiful, if not one of the most beautiful women in the world. She met a powerful man, they fell in love and Lamia got pregnant. But of course this is not where the story ends. Unfortunately, her lover already had a wife, who was obviously not happy about this situation. In fact, she was enraged. As her revenge, she took Lamias children away from her and turned Lamia herself into a serpent. The loss of her children made the former queen insane and she started to steal and eat other women’s children. But not enough, the betrayed wife added an additional curse – Lamia was not able to close her eyes anymore so that she would never be able to shut away the visions of her lost children.

In other words, she became a beautiful but cruel monster, her upper body being human but the rest of her body being serpentine. Still, she has three special abilities. The first one is body shaping, the second one predicting the future and the third one witchcraft. Lamia is definitely a woman you should be afraid of, as the creature doesn’t only get pleasure in eating children but also in stalking and hunting them before.

So what do you think? Did I just tell you the story about a creature from the Greek mythology or is it only a thriller made in Hollywood? You can find out on chiosradio.gr.

Solution:
The story of Lamia was born out of Greek mythology; it appears in the ancient writings of Homer and Horace, and it has such a firm place in oral tradition that Greek people, even today, use Lamia’s name to frighten little children into good behavior. She had an affair with Zeus and Hera took revenge on her. Other stories tell that Hera killed Lamias children or even made her eat them herself. Lamia was the daughter of Poseidon, and possible mothers could be Ceto or Hectate.
