Will o' the wisp

Today I have once again a riddle for you. I will present you today the creature will-o'-the wisp – you have to decide in the end, if the creature is from the Greek mythology or some other culture or made up by Hollywood.

The creature is not only known under the name will-o'-the-wisp but also as hinkypuck, hobby lantern or ignis fatuus. It belongs to the atmospheric ghost light or fires, that are found mostly in the humid climates. You can find will-o'-the-wisps mostly in bogs, swamps, marshes, dark forests and on cemeteries.

It is said, that will-o'-the-wisps are either small flames or fire ball, hand or even head sized. Their color is mostly reddish, greenish or bluish. Some will-o'-the-wisps are not moving, others are just flickering and then disappearing. In some stories they even move to lead somebody astray.

Will-o'-the-wisps are often seen as ominous and evil-minded. In many myths the will-o'-the-wisps are the souls of dead people who either were bad during their lifetime, or people who don't find peace and wander around the earth. Sometimes it is even said, that they are the souls of the people who died in the bogs or swamps.

Goblins, natural spirits or demons conjure the wisps, or they appear as them to harm humans on purpose. The light should lead the travelers, adventurers or the curious to their end. The victim, that is already near to the dark forest or dangerous marshes is lead deeper into it by the will-o'-the-wisp. Then most of the victims get lost in the forest, or they mire in the mud.
