Ugallu

Today on Creatures from Hellas we present a creature called Ugallu to you. The name of the creature can be translated to “Big Weather-Beast”. At the end of the article you can guess if the Ugallu really is part of the Greek mythology or not. As always you can check it by clicking on the solution button below.

The Ugallu is a demon with the head of a lion and he has the feet of a bird. The way he was shown changed a bit over time. At first he used to have human feet which later morphed into the eagle’s talons. Besides it became popular to dress him in a short skirt.

He was seen as the personification of moments of divine intervention in the life of the people.

The Ugallu was first created as a monster to help one of the gods in his conflict with other gods. But later on he was captured by another god and rehabilitated to work in a constructive and positive way.

This also changed the way people were thinking about the Ugallu. From then on they celebrated him as a protective charm to ward off evil and disease. The people put symbols of Ugallu at the doors of houses, palaces and temples to protect them.

Now it’s your turn to guess: Is the Ugallu really a creature from Hellas or is it just a construction of my imagination?

Solution:
The Ugallu is not part of the Greek mythology, but of the Mesopotamian one.
