Culture - Koulourakia
The Greek specialty of today is Koulourakia – a traditional Greek dessert that is served around Easter.
The base of this pastry is butter. In general they taste sweet with a touch of vanilla. Moreover Koulourakia are famous for their sesame seeds and special ring shape.
Fun fact -the word Koulourakia is the diminuitive form for a loaf in the shape of a ring.
The pastry is mostly eaten to coffee in the morning or to tea in the afternoon.
All you need for Koulourakia is
500g sugar
6 egg yolks
500g margarine
3 packets vanilla sugar
2 packets baking powder
1 cup of cold milk
Flour
1 egg to brush the top of the pastry
Mix the butter together with the sugar, vanilla sugar, baking powder and the 6 egg yolks. Add the milk while stirring. Stir around on the highest level for about 3 minutes. Afterwards add some flour until the dough isn`t sticky anymore. Then cut the dough into circles. The dough should be half a centimeter thick. At the end brush the pastry with the whisked egg.
Bake them in the oven for around 15 to 20 minutes at 180 degree.
