Kariokes

If there is one thing that Greek people love to eat it`s sweets. In this article I will introduce you to the traditional Greek sweet Karioka which originally comes from northern Greece. It is a walnut filled chocolate cresencts and trust me it tastes amazing!

And this it what you need for it:

  • 250g sugar

  • 250ml water

  • 125g dark chocolate (in small pieces)

  • 85g butter

  • 300g chopped walnuts

  • zest of 1 orange

  • jucie of half a lemon

  • 450g pettit beurre biscuits (powdered)

  • 1kg dark chocolate for the coating

How to make it:

  1. For the filling, boil the water and the sugar in a pot and let it boil until the sugar is dissolved. Remove the pot from the heat and add the butter, the chocolate pieces, the orange zest and the lemon juice. Blend until you get a smooth mass.

  2. Now mix in the chopped walnuts and the biscuits.

  3. Take 1/3 of the mixture and form a 3-4cm thick roll out of it. Wrap it into plastic and put it into the fridge overnight. Repeat this with the rest of the mixture. So you get 3 rolls in total.

  4. Short before you take the rolls out of the fridge start making the coating. For this melt the dark chocolate.

  5. After melting the chocolate take the rolls out of the fridge and remove the plastic. Slice them into 1cm thick pieces. Dip each piece into the melted chocolate and place it onto a baking tray with parchment paper.

  6. Let them cool down and enjoy!
