Palia Potamia

Palia Potamia ("Old Potamia"), is located in a valley hidden near to Nea Potamia, ("New Potamia"), around 50 km from the city of Chios and only nine from Volissos.

 

Palia Potamia ("Old Potamia") is an ancient and deserted village nowadays, with many oaks, spring waters, old buildings and remnants of windmills. Ir lies in the junction of two rivers, wherefore the location take the name of "potamia", which is Greek for rivers.

This places was abandoned in 1970 by the inhabitants, who moved into the today's Nea Potamia, just 2 kilometers away, in order not to be spotted easily by pirates.

Actually Palia Potamia consists of ruins and rubble of stone houses. But the school is intact still, built in 1912 for inhabitant residents, and the church of St. Anthony.

From the present location one can enjoy the panoramic view from the village over the hill of Panagia Despina, and also try the local cuisine, served in the small taverns of Nea Potamia. The area is also famous for its noteworthy Aeolian potential, which led to the installation of eleven wind generators to the Aeolian park of Potamia.
