Pagida

The small village of Pagida is located in the southeast of Chios, 21 kilometers from the city of Chios and situated between Kini and Didima.

Though in the past the village was the home of famous musicians and masons, its inhabitants today are mostly working as farmers, who earn their living by cultivating olive and mastic trees. The name Pagida comes from the Greek work “παγίδα”, meaning trap. Since in the past the village served as a administrative center of the area with a court and a notary, the perpetrators who were convicted here gave it the name Pagida.

Though not much is know about the past of this place, following its development is quite easy, as it was probably a community of families, who owned and worked on their fields. As the number of families grew, so did the village. The earthquake of 1881, however, struck Pagida and destroyed many elements of its old architecture.
