Rembetiko

The movie “Rembetiko”  was produced in 1983 by Costas Ferris and portrays the life of Rebetiko singer Marika Ninou. A movie about music.

The story

The movie is about a well-known singer Marika Ninou who is the main character of this movie. It starts with the birth of him in 1917 in Turkey. She had to leave Turkey at the age of seven. During the time in Greece, her new home, her parents became famous with their music and singing. One day her life changes immediately because her father killed her mother. After this really bad experience she leaves her home and starts her own life. When she returns a few years later she visits the place where her parents got successful and finally she to. But an happy-end is not so easy. Her best friend Babis, a musician, is exiled and because they trust each other so much they leave together. Marika wants to continue her career as a musician and so she decides to go on a tour in America. Just her daughter suffers from this because she is sent to a convent school. During the time she becomes famous in Greece and many other countries.

This movie shows a life that changes a lot. It contains some political and social problems. Moreover this movie won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1984 and many other prices.
