Zap Mama

Zap Mama is a stage name of a Belgian artist Marie Daulne, the daughter of a Belgian man and a Congolese woman, born in Congo.

Her father was killed during the Congo crisis when Marie had only been born. After that with her family she moved to Belgium because of her father’s Belgian citizenship. Growing up in Belgium on the beginning wasn’t easy but Marie’s mother sang with her and her sisters traditional Congolese songs and this was bringing happiness in her life. After Marie left her home, she remembered the African songs her mother sang to her as a child and she started with her sister to sing African melodies and write her first songs and that’s how Zap Mama was born.
It’s hard to say something about Zap Mama’s music in general because every album is different and Marie herself claims: "I’m a nomad. I like to discover my sound with different instruments, different genres. For me it’s normal. My name is Zap Mama (zap means to switch tv channels) – it’s easy to understand that it’s easy for me to zap in from one instrument to another, a culture, a style. I’m more a citizen of the world, not an American or Belgian.”
Zap mama is world wide famous thanks to her amazing music, she released already 7 albums and the 8th one will be released soon. She is also famous because of her collaboration with artists like DJ Krush or Erykah Badu.
