Kellee Maize

In this Band of the week we present you the singer Kellee Maize who is considered one of the best female rappers in the industry. She started singing and writing poetry and songs at a young age to entertain herself and escape from the reality. In her late teens she moved to Pittsburgh with a dream: changing the world. In these times the Hip Hop culture was solidified as her passion and outlet for activism.

As part of her aim to make a difference in the world in 2006 she co-started her own female owned and operated, socially conscious company, Nakturnal. Which has been considered the leading guerilla marketing and events organization in the region, that works daily for independent artists and worthy causes like women’s rights, environmentalism and issues relating to poverty and racism.

While Nakturnal was growing, Kellee released in 2007 her first album, Age of Feminine.  After that she continued her musical work with the albums Aligned Archetype (released in January 2010) Integration (her third album released in November 2011). Owl Time (released in December 12 of 2012). Her fifth and last studio album for the moment is The 5th Element, officially released on Valentine's Day 2014 which main theme is the love. But you can enjoy her songs with a different sound in her album “The Remixes” which is out since October 2014.

Her spiritual side is reflected in all her music. As part of her commitment in 2013 Maize performed at Zeitgeist Media festivals in Los Angeles and New York City supporting The Zeitgeist Movement.

We can mention some of her musical accomplishments: she has been declared the most downloaded artist on FrostWire for her album Aligned Archetype and on Amazon.com with her record Integration. In June 2011, Maize joined Eminem, Lil Wayne, OutKast, J. Cole, and others as one of the seven hip hop acts to perform at Bonnaroo in Tennessee. Other important moment in Maize’s career was when her single, "City of Champions" competed against Wiz Khalifa’s "Black and Yellow" as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ favorite "Road to the Super Bowl" song. In addition, in polls taken by the Pittsburgh City Paper, Maize was voted in the "Top 3 Best Hip Hop Performers" three years in a row (from 2008 to 2010). In 2010 she was nominated as "Best Female Artist at the Pittsburgh Hip Hop Awards".

Her personality and vision of the world strives her to enjoy and appreciate the present.  She feels her purpose in life is to make music that sends out good energy and makes people think.  She believes massive global change is coming and that it starts with the individual.  Kellee is convinced that we have the power to help positively the world by "being the change we wish to see", as Ghandi put it.  In her opinion, music and art hold the key to the revolution we need and we can enjoy this moment while opening hearts and minds.

Also we can observe her strong believing in her declarations: she said she would like to change hip hop by "rapping and singing about things that aren’t found in mainstream hip hop like yoga, environmentalism, oneness, spirituality, beings from other dimensions, and indigenous wisdom." Kellee hopes to change the world for the better with her lyrics.
