Beer

Everybody knows this drink (famous in all the world) so there is no need to describe it! But surprise! Greece has a long tradition since V century B.c, infact every greek island owns a brewery. You can find some famous beer like: Fix Hellas, Alpha, Mythos and so on.

It produced and fermented in different ways and with different ingredients: barley malt, rice, corn, wheat, oats, rye, and spelt.

To make the beer, the malt is immersed in hot water, where thanks to the “germination” which includes yeast and the carbon dioxide, starches are converted in sugar.

It can be flavored with aromatic herbs, fruit or hop.

There is a legend about a old man called Achillios that was famous in all the village for his delicious plates with wine and other ingredients but one day the king ordered him to cook a big dinner for the hosts in the castle. In the beginning, he was going to cook its favourite dish: the turkey with potatoes and wine. When the day arrived he was very desperate because there was no wine so he decided to create a yellow liquid with water, alcool and barley and put in the turkey. At the end of the dinner, the king and the hosts were very happy and the king asked to Achillios:”There was no wine, so what did you put?” and Achillios answered:”I used my special ingredient: the beer”.

Now, try to guess if the greeks invented the beer.....Have fun!!!
