Mirror

Plenty of stories of mirrors were made up by people; they make it until now. This motive exists as a superstition, bad luck for seven years, as the almost most important thing for women and as a character in cartoons.

‘ Mirror mirror on the Wall who is the fairest of them all?’ … I think this is the most popular sentence which every little girl knows from a fairy tale ‘Snow Beauty’. A Princess with hair dark as the night and skin as white as the snow and her evil and jealous stepmother who wants to eliminate the innocent stepdaughter, because of her extraordinary beauty. This fact was confirmed by the Evil Queen’s Magic Mirror which can be as well a symbol of truth and problems as also of course for the Snow Beauty at the same time, but in final this story has a happy ending.
Motive of mirror we also can find in the Greek mythology. The myth of Narcissus is the best example where human self-admiration is shown. Narcissus was a hunter who was known for his unusual beauty. He was really self confident and proud of his existence, and thus he didn’t care who loved him. One day Narcissus was walking in the forest when Echo, a mountain nymph, saw him and immediately fell deeply in love with him and she decided to follow her love interest. After some time Narcissus realized that someone is behind him and shouted ‘Who’s there?’. Nymph without thinking repeated ‘Who’s there?’. She eventually revealed her identity and attempted to embrace him. He stepped away and told her to leave him alone. She was heartbroken and spent the rest of her life lonely in a glens, just the sound of the echo remained of her. Nemesis, the goddess of reveng, who knew what happened, decided to punish Narcissus. She lured him to the lake which was calm, crystal and looked like a mirror where he saw his reflection. At once he fell in love, without realization it just an image, but he didn’t want to leave it, so he stayed close to his ‘real love’ and changed in the flower which today is called him Narcissus.

Do you think this is a true story?
